The benefits of using drama to teach First Nations concepts: podcast

Teaching First Nations concepts can be quite challenging and lead to educators to giving up on covering the lessons or to rely solely on Indigenous teachers.

"Teachers can have a lot of ignorance and even though there's some interest in teaching first nations content, there's a big fear of getting it wrong," PhD candidate at Monash University, Danielle Hradsky, told Education Review.

In her recent study, Hradsky explored the role of drama in teaching First Nations curriculum and found that it could be one of the ways teachers can boost their confidence and share knowledge with students.

"Sometimes this history can seem very distant and drama can be a way to make connections. It's playful, it's fun, it's creative, but also critical and encourages changes as you can pose complex problems with students and get them to think critically."

Hradsky joined Education Review to discuss the role of drama in teaching First Nations concepts as well as the associated challenges in teaching such history.
