Are dangerous animals, extreme sports and adventure stories the way to pique boys’ literacy interest?

It's a stereotype that has been in existence for decades, if not centuries, now: boys enjoy figuring out how things work, assembling them, and playing sports and the like, while girls seek solace in language and the ability to communicate to make meaning.
