Your class could win prizes while tackling e-waste with MobileMuster’s latest competition

Are you looking for a meaningful way to teach students about their role in creating a more sustainable technology space? Until the 1st November, Australia’s biggest mobile recycling program, MobileMuster, is accepting entries for their fifth annual schools competition to help you do just that.

"What's in a Phone?" competition

This year's competition theme, ‘What's in a phone?’, invites students to delve into the fascinating world of mobile phone components and their potential for recycling. By submitting their own artwork or a short film before 1st November 2024, students can demonstrate their understanding of responsible e-waste disposal and why it matters for our planet.

With the chance to win a virtual zoo visit by Taronga Zoo and a $4,000 JB Hi-Fi gift card for the winning class, this is a must-enter competition for primary and secondary students.

As recycling mobile phones via MobileMuster is easy, convenient, and free, the program is encouraging entrants to also recycle their old, broken phone as part of their entry – or come together as a class or school to collect a few phones – via its Zoos charity program.

How does the competition support my students?

By encouraging your students to participate in this competition, you can help to:

  • Instil lifelong habits: Students will gain a deeper understanding of the environmental implications of e-waste and the importance of responsible consumption and disposal practices.
  • Foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills: The competition challenges students to analyse complex issues and develop creative solutions, preparing them to tackle real-world environmental challenges.
  • Encourage creativity and self-expression: Students can choose from a variety of mediums to showcase their ideas, fostering a sense of agency and ownership over their learning.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to make a difference

By cheering on your class to enter the "What's in a Phone?" competition before the 1st November, you and your students can contribute to a growing movement for a more sustainable future.

In Australia alone, a staggering 13 million unused, broken mobile phones are sitting in drawers and cupboards. These phones contain valuable resources, including precious metals and rare earth elements, that can be recovered and reused.

By recycling mobile phones through programs like MobileMuster, we conserve these resources, reduce carbon emissions associated with raw material extraction, and prevent harmful substances from leaching into our landfills and waterways.

For over 25 years, MobileMuster has been successfully helping to reduce Australia’s e-waste by recycling mobile phones and accessories. In 2022-23 alone, MobileMuster collected 96 tonnes of mobile phone components - the equivalent of reducing global warming by 288 tonnes of CO2 emissions, saving 405 tonnes of mineral resources, or planting 5,000 trees.

Together, we can inspire the next generation to become responsible stewards of our planet and create a world where e-waste is minimised, resources are conserved, and environmental well-being is prioritised.
