Sal Khan, from Khan Academy, announced as keynote speaker at EduTECH 2024

Education festival EduTECH announced yesterday that it has secured Sal Khan, chief executive officer of Khan Academy, as the keynote speaker at its August congress and expo.

"This exclusive appearance marks a significant highlight for EduTECH," said Rita Nehme, the marketing director at Terrapin, the company that produces the event every year.

"Sal Khan's insights and innovations in education have a lot to teach us about how education and technology can intersect in ways that benefit everybody," she added.

Mr Khan is the founder and leader of non-profit organisation Khan Academy, a multichannel education platform for those who can't access education traditionally, or to supplement and personalise existing ways of learning.

The interactive lessons and practice tests simulate classroom learning across a range of subjects.

Since it started in 2008, Khan Academy has been translated into over 50 languages, and has more than 150 million registered users in over 190 countries.

Mr Khan has also seen the potential of Open AI, with Khan Academy using it to pilot a personal tutor, Khanmigo, to work with students one on one, and act as a teaching assistant.

Mr Khan believes AI technology can transform education, returning to a personalised pedagogical model that works better for each student, and that this will ultimately continue his mission to make world-class education available to everyone.

This year's conference

Held in Melbourne each year, this August up to 10,000 teachers and education professionals will gather at the conference to network and discuss all things ed-tech.

This year, the EduTECH conference will look at ways to advance innovation and collaboration across all levels of education, from K-12 through higher education, vocational training and workplace learning.

"The festival has sessions and exhibitors whose focus is on integrating advanced ed-tech into mainstream learning," Ms Nehme said.

"This covers everything from big-picture policy issues, such as what skills the workforce of the future will need, down to practical solutions for digital transformation, personalised learning, and even mental health support."

With the opportunities for networking also a focus of the event, educators, government, and technology developers working across all levels of education will be able to discuss the latest in teaching models and digital innovation.

This will include integrated ed-tech, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing, and data analysis into mainstream learning.

Those with a free visitor pass can go to sessions and explore what the exhibitors have to offer on the 'expo floor', including music and arts, sport, diverse education needs and inclusion, wellbeing, and ed-tech innovation.

Attendees who pay will have access to the main conference, where over 400 speakers are due to present the latest in research, best-practice modalities, and the most up-to-date thinking in the ever-advancing world of edu-tech.

The Victorian Department of Education and international student support body Study Melbourne have partnered with EduTECH for the event, and attendance is recognised as professional development.
