The capability of the education system to provide enough trained maths teachers in one question, however there are stuctural barriers that are increasingly turning students always from mathematics, including ability grouping based on questionable tests which can result in blocking many students from interesting and challenging mathematics, and the reliance on the boring drill of textbook learning which can lead to students not learning the big concepts of mathematics and how they explain our world.
Young people today seem to have a low tolerance to the boring, and if they are bored they won’t make the effort. Fluency is impotant, but makes no sense if the purpose cannot be unstood or the connections between concepts and purpose revealed. Can our teachers engage the students.
