Grattan Institute post-secondary report – troubling times ahead

The latest Grattan Institute report found that men who scored lower ATARs at school but gained vocational qualifications in engineering, construction and commerce could have higher average earnings than if they had instead pursued a degree qualification.

  1. Nothing surprising in this finding. ATAR scores are more a measure of perseverance and aptitude to schooling than a measure of much else. We use ATARs to bench our school’s success against past years and against other schools in the region but a more useful score would be employment or training outcomes 2 or 3 years later.
