Spidey sense: How an arthropod class taught students real-world lessons

A natural sciences workshop with Year 6 students made it possible to see how knowledge can turn fear into curiosity, and curiosity into respect.

Many of the reactions we have toward the unknown respond more to fear than to real understanding. As a high school science teacher, I wanted to address this for younger students, giving them access to instruments they wouldn’t have in primary school. To do this I designed an arthropod workshop for year six students, which would be taught in my high-school lab.
