As educators I would have thought it be our job to help our children learn how to actually have a healthy debate that doesn’t descend into name-calling and violence, teach them how to view both sides of the argument and to be critical and discerning when it comes to the use of statistics and bias. Teach them how to weigh up both sides for themselves and be able to still respect others as human beings, even though they hold to different values, to never see others as ‘less than’ just because we don’t agree. I thought we were meant to be teaching our children to be critical thinkers, not telling them what they ought to think.
