My sister works in remote indigenous schools in the Northern Territory and I had the privilege of spending a short but memorable stay at one school. During my visit I spent time working with a group of highly engaging indigenous boys. The boys were fit, healthy and passionate about football but at fourteen years of age they were still struggling to recognise basic English sight words. Reading and writing in English was not an easy task and the approach to teaching these boys needed careful consideration to ensure respect for their age and culture while maintaining their motivation to learn.
