Mountain of data and compliance hindering teaching: survey

The amount of time spent on paperwork is ridiculous – we should be teaching not ticking boxes."

I have recently transitioned from a career in accounting (running my own practice) to a career in teaching. There is no question the level of administration and compliance required of teachers is disproportionate to the benefits teachers encounter as a result of doing the additional paperwork. If there was a case for a reduction in compliance burdens placed on small business (and virtually everyone agrees that there is), the case for similar reductions for teachers is more obvious and more significant. How educational leaders have allowed the current situation to evolve is beyond comprehension, although a model of funding that requires schools to keep substantial paper trails to show they “deserve” the funding has clearly been a significant driver of extra admin. If I were a young beginning teacher being lumbered with the admin burden currently placed on teachers I would be eyeing off admin jobs with similar workloads elsewhere – where I don’t have to teach as well.
