I am sorry to read the continuation of the polarisation of learning methods for reading. It is possible and desirable to use both phonetics and whole text comprehension. Phonetics generally leads into whole text comprehension, but if we are looking at personalisation, why not check where students are at – then use the appropriate method for that child? Teachers need a repertoire of skills from which to choose appropriately..
