Chief executive of Independent Schools Victoria Michelle Green said: “If parents stop investing their own money and pull their children out of independent schools because of lack of government support, taxpayers will face a massive increase in funding for education. The Victorian government would have to find an additional $10 million a year if just 1000 non-government students moved into government schools.”
I say: “Good. So they should.”
Government funding of independent and faith-based schools is divisive and non-egalitarian and should be ceased as soon as possible.
The government’s job is to tax the whole population to an adequate level to ensure that it can build and staff schools to provide a superior education for all – regardless of background.
Our various governments have created a divided society by their policies of funding private schools. It is time for Australians to insist that our governments stop this iniquitous practice and properly fund public education.
