Experiences outside the classroom are unbelievably beneficial to students and to teachers. There is not only the educational aspect on many levels and subjects but there is the personal and social growth within the students and the beginnings of trying to understand our humanity, its’ history and diversity as well as a living geography.
You can’t get that in the classroom no matter how hard you try.
I have been lucky enough to accompany students to Europe, New Zealand and China & Tibet. Everyone of these trips takes immense preparation time but it is worth the time and effort to see the results.
As educators if we can spark that light of learning by allowing the students to experience something new, challenging and in a different way then we should be taking it.
