There have been many and varied theories about the causes of inequality in educational outcomes. In recent times there are those who would have us believe that inequity in education is all about the quality of the individual teacher. Yet evidence of the persistent influence of social determinants of inequality in educational participation, performance and outcomes suggest a much more complex picture. Where does this leave educators both individually and collectively?
