Mandatory testing for Year 1 students

The Federal government has released a landmark report which it says indicates the need for Year 1 students to undertake mandatory literacy and numeracy tests.

A simpler and more cost effective manner to address the matter of identifying students with support needs would be simply to allocate time for classroom teachers to review in depth each student’s progress and then the time to plan for the intervention. Not only would this minimise or eliminate potential student stress, it would also remove the complication and money associated with ‘big ticket’ initiatives like the one proposed here. Teachers do amazing things when allocated the time and space to do so. I wonder that we don’t take the simpler route much more often than we currently do.
