Race based goals spark debate in Florida

New education standards approved in Florida (USA) set academic goals for public school pupils based on race. The revised plan outlines lower benchmarks for African-American, Native American and Hispanic students, and higher ones for Asian and white students.

I believe that children from similar socio-economic backgrounds and living in mixed neighbourhoods perform similarly regardless of race unless there is some other factor involved, e.g. value placed by parents on academic attainment. If this is so, there is no need to categorize academic expectations (or goals) by race.

    Defining people in terms of category, e.g. race or gender, diminishes individuality and personhood, and could be seen, in itself, as a denial of personal human rights.
