Beyond the hype: Why AI literacy is the most important skill you can teach this year

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now a daily reality shaping how we live, work, and learn. From the algorithms that recommend their next video to the generative AI tools they use for homework, young Australians are the first generation to grow up fully immersed in an AI-powered world.

But this immersion comes with a critical challenge. While students are active users of AI, they often lack the skills to navigate it safely and critically. The gap between use and understanding is widening, creating an urgent need for robust AI literacy in every Australian classroom.

Today’s digital world: A generation online but underprepared

Recent research paints a stark picture of the landscape Australian students are navigating. Two studies from UNICEF Australia provide some telling data:

AI literacy is also a workforce imperative. The Business Council of Australia’s 2025 Accelerating Australia’s AI Agenda report calls AI “the single greatest opportunity to lift productivity in a generation”. Similarly, a recent CSIRO report highlights a fourfold increase in AI-related job postings since 2015, with demand for AI skills growing across all industries.

The classroom challenge: Bridging the confidence gap

For educators, the pace of change is daunting. While 60 per cent of Aussie teachers believe AI will significantly transform teaching methodologies, only 28 per cent feel confident integrating it into their classrooms. This confidence gap is compounded by a lack of clear guidance, time pressure, and concerns about ethics, student privacy, and academic integrity.

Without a coordinated approach, we risk deepening the digital divide. AI could either bridge or widen inequality. Students in low-socioeconomic, regional, and First Nations communities (who often have less access to devices and learning opportunities) are at the greatest risk of being left behind.

The challenge is clear: how can we equip every teacher to confidently guide their students through this new reality, ensuring no one is left behind?

Your classroom-ready solution: Day of AI Australia

This is exactly why we created Day of AI Australia. It’s a free, national program providing curriculum-aligned, hands-on AI literacy lessons for students in Years 1–10.

The program was developed by experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and UNSW Sydney, and tested by Australian educators. It is designed to be delivered by any teacher – no AI or tech expertise required. If you can run a classroom, you can teach Day of AI.

Since 2022, Day of AI Australia has reached over 200,000 students across every state and territory. Last year, 96 per cent of participating teachers said they are likely to teach the program again.

What’s in the free program?

  • Ready-to-teach resources: Complete lesson plans and slides, including engaging student activities, all housed in an easy-to-use LMS.
  • Curriculum-aligned for Years 1–10: All content is mapped to the Australian Curriculum (Version 9) and state syllabuses, embedding general capabilities like critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding, and digital literacy.
  • Age-appropriate and engaging: For younger learners (Years 1–2), lessons are playful, and not screen-heavy, focusing on foundational concepts through storytelling and design. For older students (Years 3–10), lessons tackle real-world topics like deepfakes, ethics, AI in elections, and the future of work.
  • Flexible delivery: You can run the program in a single day, spread it over a week, or integrate it across a full term.
  • Online PL sessions to support teachers: Deliver the program with confidence and strengthen your own AI literacy skills!

More than tools: Fostering critical AI thinkers

Day of AI Australia goes beyond teaching students how to use AI tools. The program’s lessons encourage students to question AI technology, how it is designed, used, and its impact on society.

Students learn to analyse AI for bias, understand how algorithms make decisions, and debate the ethical implications of its use. The program aims to prepare students to be informed designers and critical evaluators of technology, not just passive consumers.

Equity at our core

Day of AI Australia is committed to equity of access for students.

At Day of AI Australia we are committed to ensuring every student can participate in the program, regardless of their location or school resources. We offer two key support programs designed to bridge the digital divide and bring AI literacy to the students who need it most.

Free incursions for schools
We place trained university STEM students directly into classrooms to deliver the Day of AI program at no cost to the school. Champions are passionate about technology and act as powerful, relatable role models, inspiring students to explore future pathways in STEM.

Free incursions are available for public schools with an ICSEA score below 1000 in Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Launceston, and Hobart.

Device donation program
For schools with limited tech access, our device donation program provides laptops to bridge the resource gap. Donated devices help ensure all students have a fair chance to build essential digital skills. Donated laptops can be used as a shared classroom resource or provided directly to individual students.

Access to the the devices is open to public schools with an ICSEA below 1000, anywhere in Australia or schools that will provide devices directly to First Nations students. Thanks to Officeworks, Google and TDM Growth Partners who partner with us to provide the laptops.

If your school is eligible for either of these free programs, please email hello@dayofaiaustralia.com.
