The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has announced its Schools' Season for 2020 that includes programs for kinder and prep, primary and secondary students and includes world-renowned artists.
The season also contains an MSO Work Experience component that offers insights into “the work of orchestra management and arts and administration”.
The kindy, primary and secondary schools' season targets three areas. The first introduces entry level students to key musical concepts, instruments and the role of the orchestra. Primary students build on this to add orchestral repertoire and musical analysis, while secondary-aged students access orchestral experiences featuring the MSO and collaborations with world-class soloists.
“The MSO recognises that music is essential in every child’s education and that the art plays an important role in developing the future skills of Australia’s communities,” the MSO said.
“Developing the talent of emerging artists through professional development, competitions, commissions and collaborations serves to build our art form for future generations.”
Each year the MSO engages with roughly 10,000 students from over 200 schools, with more than 1100 teachers and participants. It’s also strongly committed to regional Victoria, last year touring 10 regional towns, offering 22 performances showcasing 187 artists, attracting audiences close to 13,0000 and attracting 2423 students from 34 regional schools.
MSO’s community engagement activities include its Pizzicato Effect program. Established in 2010, the musical instruction program has delivered 893 free instrumental lessons.
MSO Schools’ Season for 2020 will include a resource library full of curriculum-aligned resources and concert recordings as well as pre-concert information sessions for teachers, introducing key themes and learning resources.
