National Professional Standards for Teachers

National professional standards for teachers have been a focus of discussion in recent weeks.

The Standards are central to the reform agenda of the National Partnership on Improving Teacher Quality that was agreed by all Australian governments in 2008. This article outlines the current status of the national standards work. The National Partnership targets critical points in the teacher 'lifecycle' to attract, train, place, develop and retain quality teachers and school leaders in schools and classrooms. This concept in theory is an exceptionally good idea, like he National Curriculum. Its implementation and fee structure would be difficult to impose upon certain government bodies, as paricular States beleive they have a sytem that does not need changing. I have taught in two states and in three different sytems, all claiming that they need not change due to the fact that they are the best system. So how can one possibly implement a National Standard with narrow minded people at the helm who are not educators?
